No, this is not the average tumblr picture. But that’s okay.
This is me and my father. He was hurt in Iraq in 2006. I just wanted to put this out there and show everybody what happens. Live’s are lost, and people get hurt. My Dad being one of them. He was seriously paralyzed. He can’t talk, move, or really anything. But I love him.
So do me a favor, show love, reblog?

LIFE presents rare, color photos taken before and after the invasion, LIFE photographer Frank Scherschel captured countless other, lesser-known scenes from the run-up to the onslaught and the heady weeks after: American troops training in small English towns; the French countryside, implausibly lush after the spectral landscape of the beachheads; the reception GIs enjoyed en route to the capital; the liberation of Paris. As presented here, in masterfully restored color on the anniversary of D-Day, Scherschel’s pictures feel at-once profoundly familiar and somehow utterly, vividly new.

The Soldier Homecoming Surprise Mix

So I want everybody to drop whatever they are doing, and watch this, right now. Come on. You know you should.

And if you can get through it without tearing up, well, good for you. I didn’t.

I find it disturbing and a little bit odd that many of us spend so much time and energy focusing on death during war - which is important, obviously, we should not ignore it and we always need to honor sacrifice on a regular basis - but we have to celebrate the flipside, too. Otherwise, its just morose and depressing.

Our military families sacrifice SO MUCH, the rest of us really have no idea. Their reality is not just about dealing with death and injury and battle fatigue and all the rest, but is also filled with joy during these beautiful homecoming moment that are so much more common, and positive, and life-affirming, and genuine, too. Just watch.

Not everybody comes home, but we should celebrate the ones that do.

Jimmy Stewart continued a long tradition of military service in his family, and commanded many bombing missions over Germany - including flying the lead B-24 in formation - and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Croix de guerre from France.
Read more here.
This is a real man right here. And perhaps Hollywood wouldn’t be puzzling over why nobody goes to see their crappy Iraq War movies if they had somebody like Jimmy Stewart, making the kind of movies Jimmy Stewart would agree to make.
DUH.

Libya Declares Immediate Halt to Military Action Against Anti-Government Force

talkstraight:

Libyan Foreign Minister Musa Kusa has declared an immediate halt to military action on anti-government forces Friday in an effort to “take the country back to safety and security for all Libyans.”

Amazing what the threat of a few good bombing raids will do for you.

There comes a time when nothing else works but the threat of military force.

This is great news, at least for right now.
